Artificial Grass Maintenance for Fall

More Laguna Niguel residents are switching to artificial grass than ever before due to turf’s extremely low-maintenance nature and evergreen aesthetic appeal. With no need for daily watering, weekly mowing, regular fertilizing, and other required lawn maintenance, a synthetic grass yard is the easiest way to have a pristine lawn with virtually no effort. However, some care is required in order to get the most out of your turf lawn. Especially in fall, when the leaves turn orange and start piling up on your beautiful grass, there are several quick steps that can be taken to ensure that your artificial grass lawn is beautiful all season long.

Clearing Debris

An easy way that you can keep your artificial grass looking pristine is by regularly picking up large pieces of debris. In the autumn, leaves turn color and fall, leaving your yard a mess. To clear the leaves away, use a rake to collect them together and remove them from your artificial grass. A metal or bamboo leaf rake works well, but you can also buy rakes made especially for synthetic turf. Using a push broom would also be an effective way of collecting and removing large debris from your lawn. We recommend staying away from a leaf blower for this process, as it can disturb the infill. If you do want to use a shop vac or leaf blower, be sure to use the lowest setting.

Brushing

Over time, especially in areas where you have heavy foot traffic, your artificial grass blades can become matted. This occurs more regularly in fall due to rain and the falling of leaves. We recommend cross brushing your artificial grass every month or so in order to fluff up your grass fibers and maintain the upright position of each blade. Always use a brush with synthetic bristles rather than metal bristles, as metal can damage the artificial grass fibers. By brushing your lawn regularly and avoiding matting, you will extend the life of your synthetic turf product and cut down on the need for more extensive future maintenance.

Watering

One of the biggest advantages of artificial grass installation is the ability to eliminate regular watering. Artificial turf products remain evergreen and the perfect height no matter how much or how little water they receive. However, occasional rinse-downs still need to be performed in order to clear away dust, debris, and pet waste. Rainfall is sufficient to clean synthetic grass during the winter and spring, but in autumn and in climates that don’t receive much rain, a quick rinse with the garden hose will work just as well. This should be done about once a week or so, but it is nowhere as extensive as watering a natural grass lawn. There’s no need to turn on the sprinklers for an hour straight; simply take a couple of minutes to hose down your turf and your lawn will be sufficiently clear of dust and other particles.

Any significant home investment requires some level of care and maintenance in order to preserve your investment’s value. Artificial grass is much the same; maintenance is far less extensive than with natural grass, and it’s not required, just recommended. Taking a bit of time to perform proper care this fall will extend your synthetic turf’s lifespan and keep your home looking as beautiful as possible.
