Three Important Things Synthetic Grass Installers Do To Prepare For Your Installation

Investing in artificial grass is one of the best decisions you can make for your home or business. Synthetic grass installation allows you to enjoy a beautiful green lawn all year – no watering or mowing required!

To get the most out of your new landscaping, working with an experienced team of installation contractors is essential. Below are the three most important steps reliable synthetic grass installers will take to ensure a flawless, long-lasting result.

Remove and Prevent Weeds

Whether you have natural grass or artificial turf, no one likes the look of weeds on their lawn! Your artificial grass installer will remove any existing weeds before they begin the synthetic grass installation.

Next, they’ll take the necessary steps to prevent weeds from popping up in the future. Because artificial turf allows for liquid drainage, the area beneath the base is highly susceptible to weed growth. 

A professional synthetic grass installer can install a weed membrane underneath your turf’s backing to stop weeds from growing through the perforations.

Create a Level Surface for Synthetic Grass Installation

A smooth, level surface is essential for flawless artificial grass installation. 

Your installation contractor will use there are no rocks, bumps or divots beneath your synthetic turf. Eliminating these early on is crucial to an even laying area.

Next, your synthetic grass installer will use a sod roller or plate compactor to properly prepare the base. Compacting the soil will ensure your new lawn is smooth and even to walk over.

Add a Sub-base for Proper Drainage

After leveling the base area, your contractor will install a sub-base. 

Sub-base is a layer of mixed materials that creates a solid, compacted surface for artificial turf installation. Because soil will naturally expand or contract based on moisture content, the sub-base is crucial to prevent your turf from sinking and pitting as the weather changes.

Artificial turf sub-base can either be a crushed miscellaneous base (CMB) or a decomposed granite (DG).  

Crushed miscellaneous base is made from recycled asphalt, concrete, sand and gravel. While CMB is the more affordable option, it can be more challenging to smooth and doesn’t offer the most efficient drainage.

Decomposed granite is more expensive than CMB but provides a smoother overall laying surface and better drainage. This makes DG base ideal for artificial turf putting green installations.
